Unity 2.0 launched in 2007 with approximately 50 new features. Unity was initially released for Mac OS X, later adding support for Microsoft Windows and Web browsers. The next year, Unity was named runner-up in the Best Use of Mac OS X Graphics category in Apple Inc.'s Apple Design Awards. The Unity game engine launched in 2005, aiming to "democratize" game development by making it accessible to more developers. The engine has been adopted by industries outside video gaming, such as film, automotive, architecture, engineering, construction, and the United States Armed Forces. The engine can be used to create three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) games, as well as interactive simulations and other experiences. It is particularly popular for iOS and Android mobile game development, is considered easy to use for beginner developers, and is popular for indie game development. The engine has since been gradually extended to support a variety of desktop, mobile, console and virtual reality platforms. Unit圓D's magic works by taking C# code, compiling it (IL code), using the IL2CPP converter to create C++, then translating that to JavaScript/WebGL.Unity is a cross-platform game engine developed by Unity Technologies, first announced and released in June 2005 at Apple Worldwide Developers Conference as a Mac OS X game engine. WebGL is an ultra-cool standard for graphics that runs natively right inside many browsers. WebGL will save the day - in particular Unit圓D's ability to spit out working WebGL. Many blogs and mailing lists tell us not to worry. Browser games are ubiquitous and easy.Īnd for the publisher, web games are way easier to share, promote across any device, and far cheaper to target and acquire the right customers than packed mobile app stores. Playing games right in the browser still has tons of awesomeness - for everyone from the bored office drone sneaking a Farmville harvest in one of her tabs to the kid sneaking a snack on Kong or Addictinggames between classes to the power-user who wants to keep villages producing gold while keeping an eye out for enemy attacks. As long-time makers of web games, our company is still a bit in denial. So, with a whimper, we must first accept the fact that Flash and the Web Player are dying. So here we sit, in the nether regions of 2015, with browsers (wisely) dropping support for the Flash Player, Unity Web Player, and other plug-ins.Īnd there seems to be nobody in the web game business with the clout to do anything about it. This was a different kind of viral channel - not one you wanted rampant on your PC. Having a plug-in with the ability to run arbitrary code meant that all sorts of viruses and malware could sneak in. The same code-base, with a few button presses, could be deployed to iOS, Android, PC, Consoles, as as well as the browser!Įrstwhile, browser-makers began realizing they had a security risk on their hands. Unit圓D was poised to become a juggernaut - a spectacular set of tools that took away tons of the tedium and pain of game-making and played a huge role in powering the proliferation and quality of mobile games. Surging viral channels became parched riverbeds and it became expensive to acquire users.īut as Facebook flailed, mobile flourished. To a lesser extent, some games were also released via Unit圓D's Web Player, which was a plug-in allowing games - even harder-core 3D content - to run fairly well right in the browser. Artists, animators, and engineers all came to know and love (well, tolerate) Flash. What made these games viable was Adobe's Flash - a flawed but outstanding toolset to build, playtest, and deploy web games. Companies like Kixeye, Zynga, Playdom, Digital Chocolate, and Kabam got fat and happy making quick-to-consume, easy-to-spread games that ran right on Facebook. Tl dr: If what led you here was a search as to whether Unit圓D can be used as a tool to create web games (as of November 2015). Despite the technique used to improve nurse performance, all nurse leaders teach their charges dedication to excellence by delivering top-notch service so that trainees can learn from their examples. To foster this trait among new nurses, leaders may assess performances quarterly. Nurse leaders are committed to their passion and purpose and exemplify this through their perseverance in the caregiving setting. The growing trend of autonomy for nurses also makes critical thinking a valuable professional skill for practitioners. This skill is vital in a health care environment with increasing instances of multidisciplinary collaboration. Nurse leaders guide unpolished practitioners in the use of critical thinking to develop their ability to make decisions based on a complex array of factors. Additionally, effective leaders adapt to use, and teach, ethically viable practices that enable fledgling nurse leaders to make safe and effective care decisions intrinsically. Personal integrity aids nurse practitioners in making the right choices during critical junctures in patients’ treatment plans. Integrity for one’s self and among charges is a primary objective for nurse leaders. Nurse leaders assist trainees in managing those challenges and other counterproductive influences that can result in emotional exhaustion and poor team collaboration. Such support helps peers to cope with the stressors that present during routine challenges. In clinical settings, nurse leaders work closely with trainees to help them develop emotional intelligence. With this in mind, the following nine qualities aid nursing executives in meeting the objective of fostering new leadership talent. As a result, various nursing advocates have formed alliances to develop new leaders. These circumstances make the cultivation of new nurse leaders vitally important. The retiring nurse cohort represents the biggest challenge for provider organizations who will experience a large influx of inexperienced nursing talent that will eventually comprise half the United States registered nursing pool. Now is a difficult time for organizations attempting to develop a pool of qualified nurse leaders. The lack of preparation to affect this outcome, despite years of warnings, has presented a considerable challenge for health care providers. It’s critical that current nurse leaders groom protégés to fill the void that will be left by their exodus. Today, three factors are of particular concern to nurse leaders: the growing baby boomer population, the increased demand for medical services presented by this group, and the large number of registered nurses who will soon retire. The health care field grows more complex as nurse leaders brace for a mass exodus of retiring registered nurses and an influx of fresh, green talent.ĭespite warnings of a health care talent shortage for the last several decades, developing new nurse leaders has been a low priority for current administrations. All care provider organizations need nurse leaders to oversee staff members. In case you have a question, please feel free to contact our support team. I know.when you're live and feeling the music, the pick hand can get too happy. This leads to my above comment about players who are bashers. A Tak G series sounds better plugged than unplugged. The piezo doesn't get as confused from competing resonance, because those guitars tops aren't as lively to begin with. That's why people seem to be happy with the plugged sound from stiff Fenders/Takamines/Ovations/Epiphones, etc. Generally speaking, I've found that the more resonant (often more expensive) the guitar, the worse it takes to UST's. Some string types/materials can be lovely unplugged, but too zingy through the piezo. Bone is lovely, but not as consistent as TUSQ, so bone may cause certain strings/notes to be dominant. Saddle material and string type are considerations, too. Adequately tall saddle, 90 degrees in the slot, slightly rounded edges on the bottom contact surface (as per Baggs), not as snug in the slot as a non-piezo guitar, and any excess "hot" piezo strip or braided section tamed with electrical tape and suspended underneath.NOT secured to the soundboard/braces. Back off on the volume wheel/sliders on a UST. The output isn't jacked up with a 9V battery, and the EQ and gain structure are controlled at the board/amp, as it should be. One of the reasons people like K&K style pickups better is that there's no battery-boosted gain. Piezo UST's are inherently mid-humped to begin with. The majority of people have way too much treble/brightness in the preamp (tone wheels or sliders) leading to brittle treble and an even more huge hump in the mids. On a UST that has a tone control (either a wheel or sliders), the goal is to reach parity in tone between the unplugged and plugged high E (open) AFTER you've dialed in your sound chain. A lot of the offending quack/brittleness comes down to installation, a lack of understanding about gain and EQ (both pre-amp and final output) and player technique (hard bashers). Yes, under-saddle transducers are fairly horrible, but they were game-changers in the late 80's-early 90's. For now, digest and practice… pē-ā-zō… pē-ā-zō… pē-ā-zō.I install/repair/tweak a lot of acoustic pickup systems. I’ll get into some more detail later - properties of different types, problems, installation, etc. That’s the basics of how piezo pickups work and the important bit about how you say it. That’s nice long vowel sounds all ‘round. However, Merriam-Webster recommends the following (and most people seem to have settled there): I’ve heard (and used) a number of different pronunciations over the years. IMG The big question: How to pronounce ‘piezo’ The vibrations from the guitar top are transferred to the piezo element and turned into lovely electricity A thin piezoelectric element is glued to a thin metal (usually brass or similar) disc. The construction of these is pretty simple. Instead of getting those vibrations transferred through the saddle material, this pickup is fixed or adhered to the guitar soundboard/top. The principal is mostly the same as with other pickups - turn vibrations into electricity. We know about undersaddle transducers (pickups) so let’s take a whistle-stop tour of the other application of piezo technology that’s relevant to the musician: soundboard transducers. Which brings me to… Piezo soundboard transducers Likewise, a piezo pickup also converts vibrating string energy into electricity (the only difference is how that string energy gets transduced). So, for instance, a magnetic pickup in an electric guitar converts vibrating string energy into electricity. You might have seen undersaddle pickups called Undersaddle Transducers (abbreviated to UST).Ī transducer is any device that converts one form of energy into another. Again, more details in the future but, for now, I’ll point you at an article where I discuss one of the most important aspects - string break angle. The hugely important thing to remember about piezo undersaddle pickups is that they won’t function well without effective transfer of those string vibrations. There’s a separate piezo element for each string (although the signals from each all run ‘together’ - there’s only one signal path to the amp). The copper strip is the ‘positive’ conductor and the housing channel forms the negative conductor. Like I say, it’s pretty simplified but it does the trick. MVNOs do not own their own wireless spectrum and networks, they lease network access at wholesale prices from the big 3 and re-sell it to consumers.Īs you’re reviewing what the best cheapest mobile hotspot providers are, it’s important to note what network they run on. If you’re not one of these 3 mobile providers, you’re classified as a mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO. When it comes down to it, as I highlighted in my cheapest prepaid plans post, there are really only 3 mobile national network operators left in the U.S. Mobile hotspots are cheap enough that, for power users, the benefits outweigh the cost of the device and the hassle of carrying a dedicated mobile hotspot device around. Devices that are dedicated as a wifi modem can provide a better experience. Reliably tethering to multiple devices: while some mobile phones can tether multiple devices, the more devices that are tethered, the worse the experience, with drops, etc.Free up your phone: a mobile hotspot lets you keep your phone free for taking calls, using apps, and doing other work without bogging it down.Battery life: mobile hotspots have a much longer lasting battery life than mobile phones used as data passthroughs, particularly tethered ones. And, there are a few other reasons why a dedicated mobile hotspot device can make sense for certain users than tethering: For those who are frequent hotspot users, a dedicated hotspot is more reliable than tethering from your phone. So, why would you want to buy a hotspot device (that is only a hotspot device) when you could just buy a mobile phone and tether it to your wifi devices for free? Unfortunately, today, no carriers offer unlimited data tethering on unlimited data plans without significantly pumping the brakes on speeds when you reach a certain data allotment. Many of the mobile wifi hotspot device providers below additionally have free hotspot tethering on their data plans, where you can connect wifi-enabled devices to your phone and use it as a data passthrough. Many of them enable a 4G LTE connection, though a few are starting to offer 5G speeds. Today’s dedicated hotspots are typically cheap, tiny, and can often connect somewhere between 3-15 wifi-enabled devices simultaneously. Through a mobile device such as a mobile phones or tablet, through hotspot tethering functionalityĪs I’ll discuss next, there is a difference in experience. Through a dedicated mobile modem device (similar to the one seen in the image above).Mobile hotspots can be generated in 1 of 2 ways: Since MiFi was one of the first mobile hotspot devices, the MiFi name became a bit of the go-to name for mobile hotspot technology (similar to Kleenex for facial tissues). Some people refer to a mobile hotspot as “MiFi”, however, MiFi is a registered brand name for mobile hotspot devices created by the Novatel company – not a name for the technology. What is a Mobile Hotspot?Ī mobile hotspot is device that allows you to connect one or multiple wifi-enabled devices in order to connect to the internet. First, let’s start with some mobile hotspot basics. As I previously did with research into the cheapest prepaid plans and cheapest data plans, I similarly wanted to research and share what the cheapest mobile wifi hotspot plans on the market were. People who were already set on watching those streaming services might find that Go5G Plus offers some net savings in their combined wireless and entertainment budget, but otherwise it looks like T-Mobile’s least relevant plan.Luckily, there are a lot of options out there and prices are on the decline. The Go5G Plus plan offers 50 GB of mobile hotspot and bundles Netflix and Apple TV+ for $90 on one line, $75 each on two lines, or $55 each on four lines. Magenta Max ($85 for one line, $70 each for two lines, $43 each for four lines) provides only 5 GB of high-speed international roaming, but that’s in all of the 215-plus countries where T-Mobile offers its free-but-slow roaming Magenta Max also offers unlimited priority data, 4K UHD streaming video, and a full 40 GB of mobile-hotspot use. It also doubles the high-speed roaming cap in Canada and Mexico to 10 GB. Go5G costs $75 for a single line, $65 each for two lines, or $45 each for four lines, and it triples the hotspot allocation to 15 GB. T-Mobile also offers three higher-end unlimited plans, but Magenta is best for most people. |
